The Weird Voices
The Weird Voices Series explores mental illness by inviting the viewer into a world that is both personal and universal. Each piece tells the story of a thought or emotion using imagery and color in simultaneously strange and familiar ways. Subconscious thoughts take on a visual form. The collection comes together as a visual anthology that offers glimpses of the hope, happiness, sadness, and chaos that coexist in all of us.
My creative process involves the discovery of hidden beings on the canvas. I start a canvas by smearing paint and creating random marks. Similar to the way a child finds shapes in the clouds, I find shapes and beings hidden in the chaos of the paint smears. The beings (figments of reality, daydreams, and nightmares) are part of my inner dialogue. They are pulled into view, and defined by paint, thread, and ink so that they are now corporeal. Once I can see them, I can focus on the messages and stories they are trying to convey to me.
