The Stitched Faces
Initially, the Stitched Faces series was meant to be a study of the human face and emotion.I began the series at a time in which I couldn’t always be in the studio. The series morphed into a sort of performance art.
The painting starts in the isolation of the studio. Each piece blends embroidery with painting, connecting my version of fiber art to the techniques practiced by my mother and grandmother. The embroidery allows me to take the piece anywhere I wish to go. Most pieces fit inside my handbag. This allows me to steal moments of creativity in spaces where creativity is not expected.
Creating in public can be a radical act. People become curious about what I am doing and often approach me, breaking from the isolation of their day-to-day activities to investigate. In turn, I’m pulled out of my own isolation. Regardless of background, a brief connection is made as we discuss the commonality of fiber arts and creativity of the people in our families.
