Standing with others in a crowd, we are simultaneously individuals and part of a whole. We move with and around the other people. Each glimpse of a face pulls the other individual briefly into focus. Each person is quickly seen and then quickly forgotten. We move through the crowd and hear the murmur of noise that is conversation. Somehow, in this throng of people, we find ourselves alone and isolated on an island of our thoughts.
