In a previous blog post, I wrote about how to conduct an art residency at home. In this post, I want to share the plans and resources for that art residency. The first theme I will be tackling will be the concept of Remix in Visual art.
The Purpose
Remix in the context of art involves manipulation that alters or changes the original state of a specific media into a different version. This version is an entirely new form or piece of artwork.
The remix can be achieved by:
- Adding elements
- Removing portions of the original work
- Changing or manipulating parts of specific things within the artwork
- self-appropriation of the artist’s own work
I will focus on remixing my artwork into new pieces by utilizing custom fabrics. The custom fabrics were created by manipulating photos of my other artworks to form new patterns and designs. I shared the process for creating the custom fabric in a video on my YouTube channel. I would like to expand my practice to include fabric collage and new embroidery stitch methods to create more dynamic art pieces. I would also like to uiltize the freehand quitiling/sewing option on my sewing machine. These methods will allow me to focus on elements of construction, deconstruction, and restructuring within my artwork.
Goals and Timeline
My goal is to make at least 1 piece of artwork a month. The home residency period will start on September 1st and end on December 30th, 2024. The residency will take place in my home art studio.
Budget
Most of the materials I have are available in my studio. I will use the samples from my custom fabric, canvases, acrylic paint, thread, and plain white felt and fabric.I have allocated 100 USD for materials but prefer not to spend anything if possible.
Community
In some cases, participants in a residency program will interact with other artists through discussion and critique. I will be hosting a series of discussions through the SDA.
You are welcome to join me in exploring the concept of remix in the visual arts. You can follow along with my journey and share your thoughts and experiences through the comments section of my YouTube Channel.

*Note: I will update and add resources here throughout the residency period

Other Artistic examples of Remix
These examples are not necessarily textile-based. In many cases, the artists are influenced by other media forms and remix elements from different art forms into their work.

The group exhibition frames the artistic works of Camella Ehlke, David Ellis, Adama Delphine Fawundu, and Raque Ford in the context of what it means to remix.
